Climate and Weather
- Tanzania has a pleasant, tropical climate, but it has large regional climatic variations influenced by several factors, including altitude. The hottest and most humid part of the country is the coast. Other low-lying areas, such as the western and southern parks, are also hot but less humid. The rest of the interior is much milder and often cold at night. Tanzania has a distinct Dry and Wet season.
- There is little rainfall in the Dry season and the humidity is very low. It cools off at night. Be sure to pack warm clothing because morning game drives in open vehicles will be cold, especially in the northern parks.
- During most of the Wet season, afternoon temperatures are consistently hot (around 30°C/86°F) but it is colder above 1,300m/4,265ft. Mornings are cold in most northern parks due to the high altitude.
Packing
- Pack a light warm jacket or lightweight cotton clothes for cooler days.
- Bring long sleeve shirts and trousers to prevent insect bites.
- Sunscreen, sunhat, and swimsuit also need to pack for both safaris and beach holidays.
- Pack casual shoes and slippers/sandals for safari, swimming pool and beach.

- While shorts and sleeveless shirts are acceptable for men, they will never be seen walking shirt-less in towns/cities.
- On the beach it is acceptable to wear swim suits, however you are expected to be fully covered at meal times in the restaurant. Topless sunbathing and nudity are not permitted.
Behavior
Holding hands is acceptable, while kissing and hugging in public are not.
Photographs
- Always ask permission before taking photographs of people in Tanzania – there are cultural differences that you may not be aware of and you may offend the local people.
- NEVER take photographs of any person in uniform→police, government officials, and especially MILITARY – it is illegal and you will be arrested for it.
Currency and Banking
- The unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling which is accepted everywhere, but please keep in mind that prices in lodges and most tourist shops are in USD.
- Credit cards are accepted in many places but you can expect a service fee.
- USD/Euro are the most widely accepted foreign currencies. Please make sure bank notes are in good condition and USD are not older than those printed in 2013.
- There are 24-hour ATM machines in main towns where you can only withdraw local currency.
